Honda Civic Type R

Power, Style and Comfort All in 1

Combining the feel of racing with the comfort of a stylish road car was an interesting challenge. The Civic Type R is the perfect combination of power, handling and control.

Some performance cars today decrease the driver's pleasure by reducing the experience between the driver and the road. At Honda we have a different philosophy. Coming from a racing background, we believe being in control of your vehicle is essential - after all, you drive the car; the car does not drive you.

The thrilling new Civic Type R is built to be driven. Really driven. Everything from the 4 cylinder DOHC i-VTEC 2.0 litre engine to the 6-speed manual transmission is designed to follow your every command. Honda Civic Type RAnd it's almost here.

The thinking behind the Type R's suspension and steering system is inspired by our Formula 1 experience, where cornering and road holding are all key to fast lap times. But in the Type R this technology, from the 18" alloy wheels and up, has been refined to offer an exhilarating drive no matter what road you're on. After all, there's something amazing about being in control of a car that's both ready, willing and able.

Features

The Type R philosophy is about creating a race-inspired driving experience. Ultra-responsive steering, taut suspension, quick and precise gear shifting and aggressive brakes, coupled with a high performance engine, create a stunning synergy between driver and machine.

Exterior

Front Grille

Honda Civic Type R

The unique front grille integrates seamlessly with the wrap-around headlights and is styled with a black honeycomb mesh. The central red "H" badge is a not-so-subtle reminder of its racing pedigree.

Innovative Design

An integrated, slick rear spoiler is mounted over the space-age rear hatch and dual triangular exhaust tailpipes, usually only found on concept cars, demonstrating Honda's commitment to innovation.

18-inch alloy wheels

Beneath the flared wheel arches, the Civic Type R sits on 18-inch seven-spoke alloy wheels shod with low profile 225/40 R18 Bridgestone Potenza high performance tyres, ensuring supreme grip and handling in all conditions.

Automatic headlights

The halogen headlights can sense low ambient light (such as dusk and night) and switch on automatically. In addition, headlight angle adjusters ensure a correct spread of light when the car is fully-laden.

Fog lamps

Front triangular fog lamps really stand out. Colour-coded and perfectly integrated into the front lower bumper, they give the Civic Type R even more attitude, whilst increasing visibility in poor weather conditions.

Power retractable mirrors

The side mirrors are power adjustable and heated, and even include a power retractable function. At the flick of a switch, they fold inward - handy for when you need to park in a tight spot or a narrow laneway.

Rain sensing wipers

Standard on the Civic Type R is a rain-sensing wiper system, activated by water droplets falling on the windscreen. The system automatically adjusts the timing according to the intensity of the rain.

Interior

Engine start button

It's red, round and shiny. And it begs to be pushed. Fans and enthusiasts told Honda designers and engineers that the Civic Type R must have an engine start button, and of course Honda listened.

Dual zone dash

This dash layout gives the driver the most essential information at the top of the fascia, with secondary information appearing below. The red illumination is set off by the gunmetal effect switch panels.

Race-style front seats

Finished in black Alcantara® with red stiching and red fabric inserts, the front seats have side bolsters for increased lateral support and are specially constructed using materials that help to absorb vibration.

Leather-wrapped steering wheel

The black leather-wrapped steering wheel has red stitching and also houses the audio, cruise control and multi-information display buttons. The red 'H' emblem is proudly displayed in the centre.

Dual zone climate control

The driver and front passenger can each set their own desired ambient temperature. The fully automatic air conditioning system will ensure everyone in the Civic Type R's cabin is as comfortable as possible.

Aluminum sports pedals

To complement the race-inspired design of the cockpit, drilled aluminium sports pedals and footrest (with rubber inserts) are standard equipment. These not only look great, but save weight in the car.

Alloy gear shift knob

The alloy gear shift knob has a black boot with red stitching, giving you complete control of the close ratio 6-speed box. Placed just ahead of it is a special plaque engraved with the car's unique global serial number.

Audio system

The 6-speaker audio system features a single CD player with AM/FM tuner and MP3/WMA compatibility. For easy fingertip control, there is steering wheel mounted audio controls for most major functions.

Multi-information display

The multi-information display shows outside temperature, fuel consumption, driving range, door ajar, seatbelt reminders, travelling time, odometer and dual trip meters, all accessible via steering wheel mounted controls.

Clever storage

There are 4 cupholders, huge glovebox, side pockets, bottle holders and a centre storage console with lidded armrest, as well as a range of smaller compartments to stow everything from mobile phones to MP3 players.

60/40 split fold rear seat

It takes one easy motion to collapse either section of the 60/40 split rear seat completely into the footwell, without removing the headrests. This brings luggage space from a respectable 485 litres to a remarkable 1,352 litres.

Engineering

Honda Civic Type R

2.0 litre DOHC i-VTEC engine

The Formula 1-inspired, aluminium, magnesium and carbon fibre engine produces 148 kW of power at a dizzying 7,800 rpm and 193 Nm of torque at 5,600 rpm. Quite remarkable for an engine without a turbo.

6-speed manual transmission

The close-ratio box has a high performance clutch with lightweight flywheel. 1st & 2nd gears have triple cone synchronisers, whilst 3rd, 5th & 6th gears have carbonised synchronisers, ensuring precise changes.

Drive-by-wire throttle

The Civic Type R replaces a conventional throttle cable with an advanced drive-by-wire throttle control and lightweight forged chrome molybdenum flywheel - both of which help make the engine more responsive.

Front suspension

At the front, Macpherson struts feature high castor settings and quick steering ratios for excellent response to driver input. The stiffness of the front end reduces vibrations, improving overall comfort and refinement.

Rear suspension

For the rear, a torsion beam configuration was selected to maintain a good balance between the demands of packaging, performance and weight. It also increases cornering rigidity and improves cabin comfort.

i-VTEC indicator

The i-VTEC indicator is located beside the speedometer and is illuminated at 5,200 rpm when the engine's high revving nature switches to high lift, long duration valve timing. It remains lit all the way to the 8,000 rpm red line.

Fuel economy & emissions

The Civic Type R's powerful and refined engine has a combined fuel economy rating of just 9.3 litres per 100 km*. And it's easy on the environment too, with a CO2 emission rating of only 219 grams per km.

Safety

Honda Civic Type R

Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA)

The switchable VSA system helps maintain control during cornering, acceleration and sudden manoeuvres by applying brake force and managing throttle and ignition when necessary, without stifling driving enjoyment.

Anti-lock brakes

300mm front ventilated discs and 260mm rear solid discs combine with anti-lock brakes (ABS) and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) which adjusts front-to-rear brake effort to achieve maximum braking performance.

Airbags

In the unlikely event of an accident, the driver and front passenger are protected by dual front and side SRS airbags, whilst all occupants (front and rear) receive the added protection of side curtain SRS airbags.

Front seatbelt pretensioners

Front seat occupants receive double pretensioners as standard. All four seating positions are fitted with 3-point seatbelts and an innovative seatbelt reminder system warns the driver if any occupants have not buckled up.

Keyless entry and immobiliser

Keyless entry and a secure rolling code engine immobilser are standard equipment on the Civic Type R. The engine will only start when the code in the key's transponder matches the code in the engine's computer.

G-force Control (G-Con)

Honda's unique and highly advanced G-Con technology increases protection to vehicle occupants by absorbing and dispersing crash energy thoughout the engine compartment and away from the cabin during a collision.

Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE)

During a frontal impact, ACE utilises a front-end frame structure that absorbs and disperses crash energy over a large area while also making the vehicle more crash resistant to vehicles of different ride heights.
